Cook's tip
Buns that are one or two days old and slightly dry soak up far more custard than fresh ones. If yours are fresh, tear them up and dry them in a 150 °C oven for 5 minutes first. A scoop of vanilla ice cream on top turns it into a café dessert.
Cooking it at camp
Do steps 1–3 at home in lidded enamel mugs and carry them in the cooler. At camp, set the mugs in a cast-iron pot with 1 cm of water in the bottom, put coals on the lid and bake-steam for 25–30 minutes. Make sure the custard is cooked right through.
