Cook's tip

Pack the spätzle firmly so the cups hold together after baking; a silicone muffin tray makes them easy to release. Leave out the bacon and add fried onions or mushrooms for a vegetarian version. Cold cups crisp up again in 5 minutes in a 200 °C oven or an air fryer.

Cooking it at camp

Bake them at home and pack them in an airtight box for a great picnic snack. At camp, melt butter in a cast-iron pan on the grill, press the mixed spätzle in flat and fry until golden on both sides, like a crispy spätzle cake.
